North Carolina

Child Welfare Practitioners

North Carolina law requires that persons practicing public child welfare in the state have completed 72 hours of preservice training before being allowed to interact with clients. There are currently no provisions for testing out. We can send our employees to this state-operated training. Description is as follows:

Child Welfare in North Carolina is a three-week competency based pre-service curriculum that is designed to provide social workers and supervisors with an overview of the child welfare system. Participants are expected to attend classroom training on Week 1-Foundations of Child Welfare, Week 2-Family Assessment, and Week 4-Family Change Process. The third week is an in-house transfer of learning training. At the conclusion of the training, social workers and supervisors will have knowledge that will allow them to begin to see clients in their agency.

Orientation to Social Services Case Management is for staff who will be placed in the Department of Family and Children Services and have never worked in that setting. The training is designed to be predominantly self-directed, with opportunities to discuss learning with a trainer. There is also a learning assessment tool that must be successfully completed.
